Our Story
The Herb Works was created by a retired professional cook to finally save home cooks time and money in the kitchen. We're thinking outside the box to bring you a brilliant new way to add flavor to your meals.
It all started with an empty tea bag and laziness. I was making my favorite pot roast recipe that called for several different herbs and peppercorns. I knew that not only would I have to hunt through my herb collection, measure each one, I would then have to tie them all up in cheesecloth with twine, which in my house is ever elusive.
The Solution
It occurred to me that the purpose of that tedious exercise in seasoning was to impart flavor to the dish without having to fish out bits and pieces of cooking herbs before serving. Enter the tea bag. I was helping a friend at the tearoom she owns. She had empty teabags. She would fill with whatever requested tea blend the customer ordered, then of course, steep it in a pot full of hot water until the flavors were, you guessed it, imparted into the water.
Thus it followed, in my mind, that a tea bag would be the ideal way to steep herbs in dishes requiring multiple herbs. I could make several of them ahead and have on hand when I needed them. No more rummaging around for the herbs each time, as well as saving time because I wouldn't have to deal with the cheesecloth and finding the ever missing twine.
I filled my first tea bag and heat-sealed it closed. I dropped it into the slow cooker with the roast. After 8 hours in the hot liquid in the slow cooker, the tea bag helped up beautifully. I didn't stop there. The blends now include herbs for poultry, general purpose, and Italian as well as others. The collection also has a couple of steak seasonings that get rubbed into the meat before it is cooked. New blends are always in the works to bring fabulous flavor to your meals. All seasonings are hand blended and hand packed in small batches.
